Professional Biography for John K. Antonio

John K. Antonio is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oklahoma. He received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University in 1984, 1986, and 1989.  From 1999 to 2006 he was Director and Professor of Computer Science at OU. Before joining OU, he was on the faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University and he was also on the faculty of Computer Science at Texas Tech University. 

Dr. Antonio is interested in matters of intellectual property development and infringement. He has been retained as an expert or consultant in sixteen cases/projects since 2001. In 2005 he launched CompSci Group, LLC, a computer consulting and services company.  He also recently co-founded WirelessWhere, Inc., a successful software company that provides location management solutions to law enforcement and emergency responders.  WirelessWhere is a spin-off company based on technology developed at OU. In 2007, WirelessWhere was recognized as an “On the Brink Honoree” at the 10th Annual Innovator of the Year Program, sponsored by the Journal Record, Tulsa, OK.  Dr. Antonio has co-authored three patent applications currently in review.

Dr. Antonio is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a member of the Association of Computing Machinery, and an elected member of the European Academy of Sciences. He is Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Computers. He is a member of several national honorary societies, including Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society), Eta Kappa Nu (Electrical Engineering Honor Society), Upsilon Pi Epsilon (Computing Sciences Honor Society), and Phi Kappa Phi (All-Discipline Collegiate Honor Society). His academic research interests include: embedded high performance computing; low-power and power-aware computing; reconfigurable computing; parallel and distributed computing; and cluster computing. Dr. Antonio has co-authored over 90 publications and reports in the above and related areas. Numerous agencies and companies have supported his research over the years. He has been PI or Co-PI on more than twenty sponsored research projects totaling more that $2M.

Dr. Antonio is very active in teaching. He has taught numerous courses covering many different aspects of computer science and engineering. While at Purdue University, he received a departmental teaching award for teaching excellence and was nominated for a favorite faculty award by a student fraternity. While at Texas Tech University, he received the Halliburton Award for Excellence and the Lockheed Martin Award for Excellence in Engineering Teaching.

Dr. Antonio is very active in professional society service and leadership, serving as past Program Chair and General Chair for the IEEE Heterogeneous Computing Workshop, which is a major international annual meeting, now in its 19th year. He has been session chair, session organizer, track organizer, and program committee member for numerous other international conferences. For five years, he chaired and organized the Industrial Track and Commercial Exhibits portions of the IEEE International Parallel Processing Symposium (IPPS). He was awarded plaques of appreciation for his service in organizing these events at the IPPS. Dr. Antonio has also reviewed numerous papers, proposals, and books for various journals, conferences, organizations, and publishing companies. He has received the Outstanding Referee Award from the IEEE Computer Society Press.
